Danish Embassy’s Amazonas expedition put focus on climate change and sustainable growth

Each year an area of rainforest the size of the Danish island Funen disappears in the Bolivian Amazonas, which is one of the most diverse areas in the world. In order to put forest clearance, climate change and sustainable development on the agenda, the Danish Embassy in Bolivia embarked on an expedition to the Amazonas in May 2014. The journey went from the capital La Paz at 3,600 m above sea level, across glacier-rich Andes regions and lush, misty cloud forests, to Guayaramerín at the heart of the Amazonas next to the Brazilian border. As they travelled by car, by boat and on foot, Ambassador Ole Thonke and the embassy staff visited a number of Danish-supported development projects and partners to learn about and experience the quality of Danish development cooperation: “With 32 ecological regions and 199 different eco-systems, Bolivia is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries. Unfortunately, South America’s poorest country also has the dubious honour of breaking the regional record when it comes to forest clearance, which sees approx. 3,000 km2 of forest disappear each year; an area the size of the Danish island of Funen. This is something we would like to focus on and seek to alleviate through our development programme,” said Ambassador Ole Thonke before setting off on the expedition. On the Amazonas expedition was also a journalist and a photographer from Jyllands-Posten, resulting in a number of lengthy articles on Bolivia and Danish development cooperation.
